MONEY & MATRIMONY: A SIMPLE GUIDE TO CREATING YOUR WEDDING BUDGET

Welcome back to Money & Matrimony! Once a month on the OIMDE blog, I take a look at the financial side of weddings and events, and dig deep to untangle the seemingly mind-numbing money hoops when planning a wedding.

And with March come the whisperings of the start of wedding season. So why not start at the very beginning of planning a wedding with step number 1. Creating your wedding budget!

As a double virgo (virgo sun and virgo rising, I’m very earthy!) I love the comfort I feel from having my budget set in stone. I’m one who can be *very* tempted with shiny new buys, and big sales and deals for offers and products I might not need, so the boundary of a budget can take that temptation away from me. And that’s what I want to impart to you! So with that, let’s dive right in.

Creating Your Wedding Budget: A Simple Guide

Before diving headfirst into the exciting details, it’s essential to create a budget that works for you and your partner. Setting a budget will help you make informed decisions, prioritize your spending, and avoid overspending. In this article, we’ll discuss how to create a wedding budget and what factors to consider when doing so.

Step 1: List Out Your Non-Negotiables

Before crunching the numbers, sit down with your partner and discuss your non-negotiables. Non-negotiables are the things that are most important to you and where you want to allocate most of your budget. Examples include the venue, catering, dress, photographer, and entertainment. Also, consider what you want to spend on each item and what you might want to spend on optional entertainment or deluxe options for guests.

Step 2: Crunch The Numbers

Now that you know what you need and want, it’s time to crunch the numbers. Research the cost of each line item and think about ways to save money. For example, could you find deals in bundles or inclusive packages, or could you DIY some aspects of the wedding to lessen the costs? When the numbers are settled, your wedding budget will become clearer.

Step 3: Who’s Paying?

Discussing money with family and friends can be uncomfortable, but it’s an essential part of creating a wedding budget. Determine who will be contributing to the budget, and how much they are willing to contribute. You can also explore other options, such as crowdfunding, asking for contributions to a honeymoon fund instead of a gift registry, or using online resources to help pad out the budget.

What To Include In A Wedding Budget

With an average cost of $28,000 for a wedding in 2021, it’s important to know where to allocate your funds. The Knot released a study in 2021 that highlighted where most couples spend their money and what is often considered optional vs mandatory. Some of the mandatory expenses include the venue, catering, wedding planner, and attire, while optional expenses include things like wedding favors, transportation, and beauty treatments. Knowing what expenses are necessary and which ones you can live without will help you create a realistic budget.

Wedding Budget Resources

Creating a wedding budget is not an easy task, but fortunately, there are many resources available to help you. Some popular online resources include WeddingWire, The Knot, WeddingForward, and Google Workspace. These resources provide tools such as wedding budget calculators, checklists, and helpful tips to guide you through the process.

Creating a wedding budget may not be the most romantic part of wedding planning, but it’s a crucial step in ensuring your big day is everything you want it to be. By following these simple steps, you can create a realistic and achievable wedding budget that works for you and your partner. Happy planning!

How To Plan For Rain For Your Outdoor Wedding

Spring is around the corner! It might not really feel like it right now, but soon enough we’ll have buds blooming and people moving to the beat of a springtime rhythm.

With all of the newfound beauty that springtime brings, it can make for the perfect backdrop for a wedding. New beginnings, love is in the air, the happiness from the prospect of bright futures. So exciting!

As we also know, springtime can also bring the rejuvenating and life giving energy of a good rain shower. And if you’re planning your perfect springtime outdoor event, a little rain can be the difference between a success and a rainy mishap.

With that said, what must be done? I’ve jotted down below some tips and considerations when planning an outdoor wedding. Be it spring or otherwise, weather can sometimes feel unforgiving with your outdoor event. So let’s talk about preventative steps to avoid any hard feelings towards mother nature.

Event Insurance!

This is the first one, and what I want to make sure you take into consideration first and foremost. Insurance for your event! Maybe the event is more of a backyard soiree with your friends and loved ones.

Or maybe it’s an event that you’ve been planning for 12 months that you want to make sure will talk about for the following 12. If that’s the case, I would recommend looking into some sort of event insurance to account for any maladies from the weather.

This kind of one day special event insurance can be purchased pretty easily through more major insurance companies, and minor alike. It can sometimes also be tacked on to an insurance you’re already bought into with a company (i.e. homeowner’s insurance). The process for event insurance is very simple, and just offers that extra piece of mind if your outdoor event suddenly takes a turn.

Incorporate Your Backup Venue

Holding an outdoor wedding under a (hopefully) clear blue sky? Have a tent for your dinner and reception. That way you automatically have a backup option for your ceremony, that is perfectly dressed for the occasion.

Also when considering your backup venue, consider what can be used for a quick switch. Oftentimes the decision to move to plan B is the day of the event (which is still okay if it happens!). So if that’s the case you will want to make sure the transition can be as smooth as possible.

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to communicate to all parties involved when a rain plan needs to go into effect for your outdoor event. Making sure all of the vendors understand plan B and what their role is, not just the guests, is imperative.

If you’re working with a day-of coordinator or event planner, might we suggest one, they will make sure all logistics and coordination is not only handled, but is the top priority.

Does this change where the caterer is cooking food? Does this change guest seating for the wedding? Does this delay cocktail hour? When a plan B is put into effect, it will most certainly create a chain reaction. Your planner will want you to be as prepared as possible, so it’s their job to communicate to everyone about all details necessary.

Spring Wedding Trends 2023

How’s the weather fairing for you, dear reader?

I do love the winter! Especially in the Berkshires. It really is something like no other.

But…as I do every year…my threshold for winter comes to a limit and I can’t wait for spring to begin to bloom.

Not only does Spring mean beautiful foliage, but the start of wedding season!!

And sure I’m biased because I’m a wedding planner, but I really do love it when the wedding season starts to begin and we see how the natural landscapes of Springtime in the Berkshires create gorgeous backdrops for weddings.

And every year, couples do what they want with these landscapes and create their own beautiful weekends while throwing in the trends of the year.

So what are the weddings of 2023? Let’s start with the spring below!

Spring Wedding Trends 2023

Intimate Weddings

I would say one of the biggest changes I’ve seen is the shift to keeping the ceremony portion of the wedding more intimate and private. After this, is when you would then open up to a bigger reception where you invite everyone you know.

And I think this is a wonderful idea! Ceremonies with hundreds of people could get so nerve wracking! What if you just want the people who you absolutely want to see you declare your love to your partner? After that, everyone attending the party can join in on the love all night long.

Welcome Parties/Events

Another trend I’ve noticed with my clients is the push for more welcome events for the weekend ahead. Your guests are coming from all over, and people are wanting to hold their own events (even if they’re small and intimate) to really welcome and celebrate their guests as a sign of thanks.

Maybe it’s a night with a bonfire, maybe it’s a specialty event! Whatever the occasion, creating that initial moment of celebration can really set the tone for the weekend in the best way, and I couldn’t agree more.

Wild Flowers and Ornate Spontaneity

There’s something beautiful about a lush bouquet of wildflowers. This spring, I’m predicting we will be seeing more of a shift away from complex florals that don’t reflect the flowers of the season and feel too orchestrated.

Creating atmospheres with archways of flowers seemingly created with less thought towards arrangement and more towards spontaneity is the key. And this doesn’t mean they will lose any attention to detail. This creativity just adds to the feeling of coming together from wherever you are, and celebrating with all that is around you.

Why Is Valentine’s Day So Important?

Does anyone else ask themselves this question every February or is it just me?

I feel like other holidays in the year have more of a cultural distinction (not to mention any religious importance).

These first few holidays during the year, though, always have me wondering why we celebrate them as they are now…which is fine! But, it’s always another year of “okay let’s theme another night out with friends or significant others”.

I’m never against a reason to throw or attend a party, but why do these days have such a significant expectation?

Why is this the day that I’m expected to go on a date to celebrate my love for my partner, when I want to celebrate that day not only every day, but when our schedules allow?

Let’s dive in!

Origins of Valentine’s Day

I personally find it ironic how the holiday started given its origins, which are far from romantic.

What we know from multiple legends is this began in Ancient Rome around the festival of Lupercalia.

Lupercalia was a festival to promote health and fertility throughout the year, and celebrated on or around February 15th. Fertility and romance? Okay, I see the connection.

Also to note, animal sacrifices were very common for this holiday.

How is this connected to Valentine’s Day? We’ve got a few claims to support this idea. One claim states how two Catholic men in the 3rd century, both named Valentine, were martyred on February 14th. This in turn became the feast day of St. Valentine’s Day, to honor these two martyrs.

The poet Geofrey Chauser then becomes the first person in recorded history to associate romance with this feast day in February. In his poem, Parlament of Foules, Chaucer says,

"For this was on Saint Valentine's Day

When every bird comes there to choose his match

Of every kind that men may think of

And that so huge a noise they began to make

That earth and air and tree and every lake

Was so full, that not easily was there space

For me to stand—so full was all the place."

Did he intend for this to be on the exact St. Valentine’s Day? Potentially! With the change of calendars from Julian to Gregorian, the date was most likely at a different time when bird’s were mating, but has since shifted to Feb 14th.

History of Modern Valentine’s Day

This part is pretty simple.

Shakespeare took to romanticizing Valentine’s Day just like Chauser, and it really caught on.

After that, the inherent capitalistic spirit of the Industrial Revolution took hold of Valentine’s Day with pre-made cards. And, as soon as Hallmark began producing them en masse, the rest is a tale as old as time.

Why Is Valentine’s Day So Important?

So why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Why is it so important? Well, it’s a day that we can set aside for the ones we love (significant partner, family, friends) to really tell them how important they are to us.

Why? Well, why not? I think back to the tales of the two Valentine’s martyrs. They were so impassioned, and it reminds me of how impassioned I can be for the ones I loved.

Plus, it always means the BEST chocolate is on sale the very next day

MONEY & MATRIMONY: Winter Wedding On A Budget

Welcome back, dear reader, to Money & Matrimony! The monthly series where I look at the intersection of spounces and spending, and try to demystify the financial nuisances of nuptials. Basically help you make budgeting and spending money on your next wedding easier!

We’re still deep in the throes of wintertime (despite NYC seeing barely a lick of snow!!!) and as such I wanted to talk about the wedding road less-traveled.

Winter weddings!

Yes, even a seemingly more frugal off-season wedding can still cost a pretty penny. So, what can one do to make it cheaper?

That’s what I’m here for with Money & Matrimony! So let’s dive right in!

Winter Wedding Budget Tips

Getting married in the winter is most certainly the wedding road less traveled. In fact, according to a study, only 5% of weddings take place during the winter and only 1% each during January and February!

Think about it, have you ever been to a winter wedding? I certainly haven’t, as an attendee, planner, nor coordinator.

That doesn’t mean this is a bad idea, as there are still plenty of venues to choose from. On top of that, having a gorgeous winter landscape for photos? I mean for some people this is a no-brainer!

Greenery Is The Goal

Flowers are always a major price point for weddings. Even the leanest of budgets will still see a good portion go to flowers (even if there isn’t anyone to hold a bouquet!).

But when you have a wedding in the winter, you might be able to use this to your advantage.

With the scarcity of green in nature’s winter landscape, having greenery of vines, pine, and branches from other evergreen sources could be a cheaper option. And to see that green stand out from the white, black, gold, or whatever colder climate palette you choose will really punctuate their purpose. And speaking of…

Utilize The Venue’s Decor!

If you’re looking to get married at a venue in the wintertime, oftentimes they will be using decor that reflects the season (especially if your ceremony is being held in December!).

Those elegant touches of decor at the venue could be perfect for your own landscape, which means you can relax your budget on decorations just a bit more. Let the venue take care of the fancy touches!

Plan Way In Advance And Look For Off-Season

Last but certainly not least, is a big reason why tighter budgets lend themselves to a winter wedding. Winter is seen as the off-season for weddings. This means venues and vendors very well have cheaper rates to ensure they still are able to make money during a less busy time of year.

So check around for off-season rates! Make this a priority. And, be sure to be looking at least a year to a year in a half at minimum. With some negotiating you could saving a lot of money this way.

Singles Awareness Day Party Ideas

Back in 2021, a high school student named Dustin Barnes reached out to his friends and offered to create and host a party where they come together to celebrate being single.

This idea, Singles Awareness Day, then spread like wildfire and has become the unofficial holiday that we know today!

Every year on February 15, the day after Valentine’s Day, single people across the country post on their social media and text their friends a Happy Singles Awareness Day! A day for single people to take center stage after the mushy couples in the world have come and gone with their VDay dinners, dates, and celebrations.

It’s a time where chocolate and flowers are on heavy discount, and ready to be purchased for yourself and not for someone else.

And honestly, go for it!

I have always thought that Single’s Awareness Day was a fun and harmless idea, whether I’ve been single or otherwise. Why not have a fun day to celebrate all things “you”!?

And with that said, why not go a step further?! That’s right, I’m here today to show you how you can pull a Dustin Barnes and shape your own party for the event. To make being what society calls lonely, just a bit less so.

Singles Awareness Day Party Ideas

Lean In To The Chaotic Fun!

Let’s start with the decor! How can you take all of the valentine’s day decorations at your local drug store and turn them on their head?

Break in half that giant heart decorative piece!

Send your invites for the party using Valentine’s Day cards that have been torn up and reused!

Crush up those candy hearts that people only say they like in the month of February and use them as party favors.

Give out only wilted or torn up roses!

Subverting the decor is simply (and very effectively) echoing the reason the holiday was created in the first place. So without a doubt, go for it!

Invite Your Friends!

If there was any time that it was worth it to have your friends over, now is the time! Singles Awareness Day also looks at the value of having friends and not needing a partner to still enjoy all of the beauty of life, and what it means to be human!

Pick A Rom-Com And Roast It!

One of the biggest industries out there that really digs into all that is Valentine’s Day is the Rom-Com™️. And it’s time that the Rom-Com gets its due!

Have friends over and play a Romantic Comedy that you all can really roast. Make it a drinking game if you want. Throw silly (light and nothing heavy) things at the screen when the couple is in love. Get your “Booooo!”s on during the most romantic moments!

Eat ALL of the Chocolate!

You certainly don’t have to tell me twice! One of the best parts about February 15th is all of the chocolate on sale! So set your alarm the day after and grab everything you need for the perfect post-valentine’s spread!

How To Be The Perfect Wedding Guest

One of the most exciting parts of my job, dear reader, is meeting guests at each of the weddings I work. Everyone is in a good mood and excited for the festivities of the day. On top of that I love seeing how each attendee knows the happy couple and what led them to this exact moment where we all are witnessing and celebrating nothing but love.

And no one’s experience at a wedding is quite like the wedding guest. Not necessarily a family member, and not always even a close friend (depending on the size of the wedding). But for some reason they were invited to join in on such a momentous occasion.

So with that said, here’s a rundown of some of the top do’s and don’ts of being a wedding guest. And if you’re like me in your early-30’s you’re probably also attending multiple weddings for the next few years. We could all use a refresher!

WEDDING GUEST ETIQUETTE

DO RSVP On Time And Correctly

What can be the biggest headache for couples (and their planners!) is when the RSVP’s that come in become a bit like pulling teeth. You’re being invited to an incredible weekend where the couple has made sure accommodations will be available down to the dietary restrictions!

We can only ask you to follow suit and make sure to respond within the designated time frame. Reserve your hotel stay with the block that the couple set up! Tell them about your peanut allergy ASAP! Snag that gift off the registry, if they’ve got one.

These are just some of the little things you can do leading up to the event to make sure everything is squared away.

Oh, and if you’re allowed a plus one, let them know who it is!

DON’T Take Photos If They Hired A Wedding Photographer

Listen, I’ll allow a selfie or two for your IG story (as long as it’s out of the way) but that’s it!

The wedding photographer has been hired for a reason, y’all. They are being paid at a premium to make sure the evening’s memories have been captured. And not only captured, but edited to be just absolutely gorgeous!

You will get those photos eventually from your friend’s who got hitched, but for now just enjoy the moments.

And honestly, the sooner you put your phone away for the entire festivities, the sooner you will be happy you did.

DO Follow Wedding Dress Code

Oftentimes the couple will have this listed on their invitation. And that means it’s there for a reason! Follow it!

“Spring cocktail attire” or “Autumn Semi-Formal” has more wiggle room for expression than you think it does, I promise. A quick google can help you find ways to really make sure you look and feel your best for the wedding and still be within whatever parameters the couple set for you.

And it goes without saying, but they will almost never ask you to wear white.

DON’T Hookup At The Wedding Reception

Save it for the hotel room that you booked. You could be like these guests

How To Have a Low Key Wedding

I feel like every year is the “last year” my friends all get engaged during the holidays and then have all of their weddings. But every holiday season someone else on Facebook comes out of the woodwork with a ring and save the date.

Which I absolutely love! I love to see more and more of my friends and loved ones find happiness, and wish to share that with the world.

But, I have also noticed another trend recently. The trend for a low key wedding.

As we come into 2023, more and more of my friends and colleagues are talking about how they can either save money and do something that’s off the grid. How can they enjoy something for its inherent beauty and value without needing to make sure they also let everyone know on social media and make it as beautiful and pristine and (eventually) expensive as possible?

Not to mention the added benefits of a low key wedding on your mental health.

With that said, let’s talk about it!

How To Have A Low Key Wedding

Low Key Venue = Low Key Wedding

It’s really nuts to think of how much a venue can set the tone for the wedding planning process as a whole. And a big part of that is what level of intimacy you’re looking for with your space!

If you’re looking for something that’s more intimate and low key, but also want to transport your guests somewhere new, try looking for a rooftop at your favorite bar.

Need something with more green? A remote spot in a beautiful state park is always a good idea (not to mention very budget friendly!).

How about the ultimate low key wedding locale? Gettin’ hitched in a backyard never hurts, and sometimes that’s the best place. A spot with friends and family to think back on fond memories and look forward to the future.

Keep It Simple! All Around!

Low key brings simplicity. So keep your ideas simple for the food and drink.

An iced cooler of your favorite beverages, with some pre-mixed cocktails ready to go for the bevs.

Charcuteries and other comfort bites for the food. Doesn’t need to be a full 3-course meal to be perfect for the occasion and just as delicious.

Keep the attire cocktail level, or summer dinner party. You don’t need rented tuxes for a wedding to be exactly what it needs to be.

Do you have a DJ? Or just a Spotify playlist of your favorite songs?

Have You Tried Eloping?

Sometimes this is all you need. Remember, this wedding is for you and your partner. And sometimes, you just need you two, a friend or two for a witness, and Elvis (or whomever marries you at your eloping destination).

MONEY & MATRIMONY: New Year’s Resolutions For Couples Getting Married In 2023

Welcome back, dear reader, to Money & Matrimony, and our first of 2023 (🥳)! The monthly series where I look at the intersection of spounces and spending, and try to demystify the financial nuisances of nuptials. Basically help you make budgeting and spending money on your next wedding easier!

Of course with the new year I’m thinking of resolutions. I mean, as a virgo I love nothing more than a clean slate that I can set up with my own rules and ideas and structure (I spend a delightful intimate time with my paper planner every last week of December).

But the idea of New Year’s Resolutions can come off as overkill. And so many times it is! That pressure of staying on top of something can do more harm than good!

So, instead, I’ve tried to look at resolutions as more of goals and intentions to set for myself through the New Year. Benchmarks that I strive to achieve throughout the year, and then evaluate as we reach December again.

This idea is something that can be applied to anything, soooo I of course want to see how we can plug this in to the world of weddings.

For any couples getting married in 2013, what goals and intentions can we create and establish to serve as New Year’s Resolutions for 2023? Let’s dive in.

New Year’s Resolutions for Married Couples in 2023

Budget Goals

I would say the biggest one here belongs to your budget. The money don’t lie!

Recent studies have shown that up to 74% of couples spend over what they originally budgeted.

This can be avoided! Make sure you do your research into what you’re interested in, and what’s available in the area where you plan to get hitched.

And by research I mean full research. Think about every vendor that you could consider for your wedding, and make sure to always have a line for any unexpected purchases. That buffer will come in handy more than you think!

And just make sure you check back with your budget on a regular basis. It can be a good touchstone as you move through the process of getting everything ready for the big day.

Set the intention of sticking to your wedding budget, check-in at regular intervals to keep you on track.

Communication Goals

As we all know, money can be a tough conversation. Money is sensitive, and everyone approaches money differently.

What can help here? Communication. Make sure to keep in touch with your fiance as you go through the wedding planning process.

Don’t be afraid of honestly vocalizing what you’re thinking or your opinions. Trust me, from friendships to life-long partnerships, communication will be your cornerstone.

Is there a wedding purchase you need to make that you’re unsure of? Tell your fiance!

Is there an upsell on a package you don’t think you need and can spend the money on something else? Tell your fiance!

Would you rather forego the fancy photo booth and save that money for spending on your honeymoon? Tell! Your! Fiance!

And this doesn’t need to be a big over-the-top argument. I say set an intention of finding time once a week for at least an hour to discuss with each other your financial queries regarding your wedding budget. Doing so will make sure everything gets out in the open and you’re as transparent as possible. Doing this once a week will also help dampen the possibility of blowing up in money-laiden arguments (at least regarding your upcoming wedding!).

Maybe It’s Next Year!

The last note I wanna stress is to take your time. You don’t need to get married ASAP when you’re newly engaged. Especially if it makes you nervous about your finances.

Maybe that’s your goal for 2023. Simply set a wedding budget goal for 2023 to have a certain amount of money saved up, or to have your credit cards paid off, so your wedding doesn’t just feel like debt piled on debt.

This is where communication can come into play, again. Work with each other and set your goals for what you want your wedding to look like for you. That’s who’s most important here.

What your financial new year’s resolutions? Let me know in the comments!

You’re engaged, now what?!

YOU DID IT! Congratulations on your recent engagement!

If you're wondering what to do next, you're not alone. Over 2 million couples got married this past year, which means many couples asking themselves, “Now what?” and finding themselves unsure of what steps to take after saying "yes."

But don't worry, the process is easier than you might think. Here's a helpful checklist of what to do after you're engaged:

WHAT TO DO ONCE YOU’RE ENGAGED

CELEBRATE!

Take some time to enjoy this special moment with your fiance. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so make it last as long as you want.

INSURE THE RING.

Engagement rings can be expensive, so it's a good idea to get insurance to protect your investment. Ring insurance is often more affordable than you might think, and it can give you peace of mind as you move forward with your wedding planning.

MAKE A LIST AND THINK BIG.

What do you want your wedding day to be like? Consider the season, your dream date, your favorite colors, and any other details that are important to you. This is your day, so make it exactly how you want it to be.

MAKE A BUDGET.

Sit down with your fiance and decide on a budget for your wedding. This will help you stay on track and ensure you're making the best decisions for your financial situation. Check out the Budget Savvy Bride for some great advice on wedding budgeting.

START PLANNING.

Now that you have a list of your dream wedding details and a budget to back it up, it's time to start planning. This can involve a lot of logistical work, but with good communication and the help of a wedding planner (if you so choose), it's definitely doable.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES:

  • Tell your family and friends. Don't forget to share the news with your loved ones!

  • Set a wedding date. Decide on a date for your wedding and start planning accordingly.

  • Plan your engagement party. Consider having an engagement party to celebrate with your friends and family.

  • Hire a wedding planner. If you're feeling overwhelmed with the planning process, consider hiring a wedding planner to help take some of the stress off your shoulders.

  • Don't forget to enjoy the planning process. Wedding planning can be stressful, but try to remember to have fun and enjoy the experience.

Now that you know what to do after you're engaged, you're well on your way to planning the wedding of your dreams!

Holiday Self-Care Tips For You In 2022

As I have mentioned before, dear reader, my love for the Berkshires is long-distance as I am based in Brooklyn. And while the holidays are a great time to be in the Berkshires, I just can’t quite give that first place mantel to anyone else but New York City herself.

To me, there’s truly nothing quite like the holidays in NYC.

And sure, when you’re walking to the tree at Rockefeller Center on a Saturday in December in between two Rockettes performances and the street is filled with so many tourists a women from New Jersey yells at you just for you to yell back at her, it can feel miserable.

But what about the lights! The Macy’s windows! The atmosphere! It’s almost like there’s no other place like it!

But once you look past the sheen of the holiday lights and the caroling on the sidewalks, the holidays can bring its own set of anxieties.

Did I buy the right gift? Will I impress the in-laws this season? Will my uncle ask that question again, and how will I dodge it?

I get it, dear reader. And that’s why I wanted to write this entry for this week. I wanted to touch on the importance of using the holidays for you. Yes, it’s for visiting family and coming together, and seeing how the holidays can mean a restful time for you is just as important.

So let’s dive in!

Tips for Holiday Self-Care

Get Enough Sleep

It can be so very tempting to do everything you can possibly do for fun or for family during the holidays, but please make sure to prioritize sleep!

For many people, this is a chance where you can put off work and focus on your free time. So at minimum find time to keep the alarm turned off, and get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Rest and recharge so you can walk into the new year refreshed and ready to go!

Stay Present (During Presents Or Otherwise)

In today’s society we’re always so focused on what’s next. And especially during this time of year we’re always so focused on what the new year is going to bring.

But this is the perfect time to meditate and stay present. Sure, it’s also a good time to reflect on how the year has been, but that can always push you towards thinking about the future.

You can reflect later! But in the meantime, even finding 5 min a day where you can be by yourself to stay present and meditate can offer so much balance.

In moments like these when I’m with family, I try to really stay present and soak in the moment.

Unplug!!!

For you yourself to recharge, a big help might be to unplug. And that means from everything.

Those emails can be answered later.

Your social media doesn’t need an update.

Feel like you’ll miss out from seeing your co-worker or your high school friend (whom you never speak to in real life) post about their kid’s unwrappings? Need to stay up to date with the memes of the end of the year? You don’t need any of that!

And when you’ve finished unplugging, it’ll all be there when you come back.

And I mention unplugging at the end of this post because in the end, unplugging can benefit your holiday self-care at every angle!

Unplugging means you can regulate your sleep cycle.

It also means you can stay present without focusing on a screen or the next time you’ll be able to see it.

I can’t recommend this enough. This is the biggest form of self-care for you, and in doing so, you can really work towards a happier and healthier holiday season.

Happy Holidays!!!

2022 Last Minute Stocking Stuffers

Who doesn’t love the thrill of shopping for a stocking stuffer? Well, maybe a lot of people. Maybe ever you! But I do think there’s a certain art to it.

Finding that cute item that might not cost much, might even be handmade, but in the end has a small connection between the gift giver and receiver.

And that’s why I really wanted to focus on stocking stuffers this year. Because they can hold just as much meaning as the flashy appliance or car under a giant bow you’re getting to really surprise your loved one.

So, without further adieu, here’s a few just as fabulous items you can stuff a stocking with this holiday season.

2022 Last Minute Stocking Stuffers

From Mundane To Artisanal

I love the trend of taking an everyday food item, and going fabulous and fancy for a holiday gift. In the end they can be giant fruit and cheese baskets curated with care, or just one specific item the perfect stocking size.

I recently received this delicious whole grain mustard from France from the brand Trois Petits Cochons (French for three little pigs). A delicious find for anyone looking for a snazzy upgrade for their next sandwich and a stocking stuffer for your foodie friends. You can find it in person at The Shop

For Millennials, It’s Coasters

If there’s one thing my friends and I have learned as we grow into elder millennials is the importance of a good coasters.

Did we listen to adults growing up who said to use them? No!

Do we realize the importance of them now that we have our own furniture and antiques to take care of? Absolutely!

On top of that, any millennial is a sucker for originality and something to make their character stand out. Which is why these coasters from Drinks On Me Coasters are the perfect gift. With their own quotes and phrases for any (truly, any) personality, you’re bound to find one your millennial loved one will adore. Found on their website or in person at The Shop

Locally Made Greeting Cards

A holiday card is always a lovely touch to any stocking. A personal message/greeting for the holidays with an (optional) trinket, bookmark, or gift card is never not a nice gesture. A way to step it up? Finding a beautifully local hand-crafted holiday card to use.

Greeting cards are a great way to support local! Always a lower cost way for you to invest in your own community.

The Shop’s own Mike Zippel’s series, Beloved Buildings, has a collection of cards that are perfect for the holidays this time of year, or any holiday! Now available at The Shop

MONEY & MATRIMONY: Planning A Holiday Wedding

Welcome back, dear reader, to Money & Matrimony! The monthly series where I look at the intersection of spounces and spending, and try to demystify the financial nuisances of nuptials. Basically help you make budgeting and spending money on your next wedding easier!

When I started working in weddings, I always thought back to one of my favorite memories growing up. I was 8 (I think?) years old, and my entire family got invited to our family friend’s wedding on New Year’s Eve.

And for those of you who don't know, yes, even in South Carolina (where I grew up) it gets very very very cold on New Year’s Eve. So to be attending an outdoor wedding on New Year’s Eve certainly was going to create a lasting memory.

But as an eight year old, I was SO excited to be able to stay up so late and hang out with a bunch of adults! I felt so fancy and grown up.

And since then, I always thought that I would see more of these holiday weddings in my lifetime. There have been a few (mostly on Halloween) but overall, people typically avoid holiday weddings like the plague. Sure, it might be near a long weekend with bank holidays, but a Christmas, Halloween, or New Year’s wedding? Why not?

That’s what we’ll be talking about today. Going a bit more in depth on the financial pros and cons of hosting a holiday wedding.

Pros and Cons of a Holiday Wedding

Better for the budget?

What are your plans for Christmas or New Year’s? Typically you’re going to parties at friends’ houses and/or visiting family right? Maybe going out to a club or more public party. These are typically the directions we go.

Less often will you be going to a wedding. And it shows with venues. Venues don’t expect their holiday weekends to fill up nearly as fast as other weekends. That could mean good things for your budget!

There’s less demand for the vendors or venues you’re looking for, and so they might hold an “off-season price” or more affordable price. Things to keep in mind.

Also, going to a venue that is already decked out for that particular holiday means there’s built in decor. Another save for your budget!

Deepens both the experience and memory!

I meant it when I said that that new year’s wedding left a lasting impression on me. I thought it was the coolest way to ring in the new year when I was such a little kid. So for the couple it can only mean that much more.

Future holidays when you celebrate will not just be a holiday to remember, but your anniversary, as well! Maybe it’s a holiday that you both love so much already so in this case, the memories are only deepened.

Guest List?...it’s hard to say…

I always tell couples to expect 75%-85% of the guests they invite to actually attend your wedding. If it’s on a holiday, well it’s hard to say. Certainly it depends on the holiday. For families, this could mean a larger influx than usual. Both weddings and holidays can often be built-in family reunions so combining them only means that many more cousins are attending.

Friends and guests outside of the family circle, maybe not so much on family-oriented holidays like Christmas. Halloween or New Year’s might mean more on the friends end of things that is.

Also, your venue and vendor might be less expensive, but we all know that holiday travel means more expensive flights and hotels. So keep that in mind when thinking of who you’re inviting and what holiday you want to plan around.

Your 2022 Holiday Party Checklist

Okay so now that the King and Queen of Christmas have both made their entrances, we are officially in the swing of the 2022 holiday season!

Well for most people (I for one love to give Halloween it’s due as my personal start, even if the holiday has got a bit more cobwebs).

So what does that mean? Why, it means merriment, fun and fancy lights, cozy fireplace evenings around the tree, and above all else, THE PARTIES.

I’m just gonna say it, dear reader, I love a good holiday party. I’m stuffed on charcuterie and chardonnay by 4pm and watching a holiday movie I’ve never seen before (or haven’t for at least 365 days) just to later be filled to the brim with more of the same along with laughs and love from close friends and loved ones.

And, if I’m feeling up to it, I’ve been wanting to dip my toe in the hosting pool. I think it’s finally that time for me (that and my apartment is now big enough to both host people and keep a cozy vibe).

And what about you? Thinking of doing the same? Asking yourself, “how to throw a holiday party?”

Well never fear! This double virgo party planner has done the digging and is ready to impart with you exactly what you need to know for the holiday soiree of your dreams.

Oh and just for the record, this is for an at-home holiday party. I love a company party as much as the next Mad Men fanatic, but I’m sticking with at-home for this round.

Your 2022 Holiday Checklist

Pick Your Date! Set Your Budget!

First and foremost (just like what I say with any wedding) figure out both your date and your budget. Put out feelers if you need to to see what dates work best for people. And don’t stress too much about your budget. In the end, your budget will be fine if you’re able to have clear delineations for food, alcohol, entertainment, favors, wiggle room, etc. Just making sure each aspect has a budget line. This is also where you can send out a save the date to friends, but before that make sure you…

Finalize Your Guest List!

Very important to remember! I’ve always heard the rule of expecting ⅔ the amount of people you invite, but in the end it differs from friend group to friend group (especially if it’s a more intimate affair).

But always plan for more than anticipated, and set your RSVP date at minimum two-three weeks out (you can do sooner, but with so many parties happening this time of year, the earlier the better!

Oh and did I mention set your RSVP Date? I did, and I will again!!!

Establish Holiday Theme and Party Events!

You’ve got the guests and budget down, now let’s get creative!

Create your theme (pretty easy when calling it a holiday party does half the job) and see what events/entertainment you can incorporate into the timeline of the evening.

Going with a classic white elephant party? Putting a twist on the classics instead?

Do you need to think about bringing in any outside help (like a bartender or server or DJ)?

I would say this is the point where you can really finalize any major budget tweaks, especially as you get closer to that RSVP date.

Did I mention adding an RSVP date? I did!!!

Make A Countdown!

Build up the momentum and get your guests excited! Oftentimes in this day and age people will set up a Facebook group where they set up invites. Use this to put in posts for themed cocktails you’re creating, white elephant rules, etc. This is a great time to create a buzz.

It’s also a great time to make a countdown for the day of, and that wonderful RSVP date (I truly can’t stress that enough).

HAVE FUN!

Okay so you’ve made it to the evening! Congrats! Sure you’ll be in hosting mode all evening, but remember that you set this up for yourself, as well. So with that in mind, make sure to stay present and have fun!

Enjoy the ride of the night. Holiday parties and (almost) always once a year so take advantage of the love and merriment while you can.

Save Your Ornaments (& Notes) For Next Year!

You did it! You made the party happen, and you should be proud of your hard work.

Would you consider it again? Anyone who’s planned a party before knows there’s just some things you’ve gotta learn along the way. And if that happens to you, great!

Take those notes to heart when you pack away your decor and say your goodbyes. That can only come in handy for a bigger and better holiday party next year.

OIMDE’s Favorite Things - 2022 Holiday Gift Guide

Ho, ho, howdy, dear reader! A new year means a new gift guide!

Last week, I dipped a bit into how our current economy is shaping our holiday shopping season for this year. In some ways, not ideal, but it’s also apparent that shoppers aren’t necessarily deterred from still making sure they check their family and friends off their list like they do every year!

And one way that you can do this while still making a more conscious shopping decision for this year can be in the form of shopping local.

So with that said, I shan’t hold you back any longer! Let’s dive right in to this year’s Only In My Dreams Events Holiday Gift Guide! 🥳❄️

2022 Holiday Gift Guide

This year we’re highlighting our Berkshire Packs! With many different themes for many different moments in our lives, our Berkshire Packs are locally sourced.

We look at every Berkshire based artisan that we order from to make sure it’s the highest quality so you know your gift will meet the standards of you and your recipient.

Below are just a few of the packs we have to offer!

For The Aunt Who Said This Would Be Her Last Year Teaching, Again

You’ve got that one relative who truly has found their passion with teaching, and yet you know how tough the past couple of years have been for them.

Welcoming them with a Rest and Restore Pack from our Berkshire Pack line offers them a hand selected at home spa that will surely aid them in keeping up their strength for one of, in my personal opinion, the most selfless jobs out there.

You Don’t Wanna Give A Gift Card *Again* But…

I certainly have family members that I see their name on the list and ask myself I can’t go with the gift card again!!

Now with that said, we have a Berkshire Pack that turns that on its head while also giving you some gifts, as well! Our Keeping It Local Pack is geared more like a starter for your own Berkshares journey.

What are Berkshares you might ask? Put simply, it’s the currency of the Berkshire region. To take the spirit of shopping local even further, this pack comes with an amount of Berkshares that you can take to participating shops in the Berkshires to further ensure you are keeping the local economy not simply surviving but thriving! But a few small local goodies were thrown in the box, for good measure.

Need to know where accepts Berkshares? You can follow this directory here

For That Friend Who Wants Something New

A few of our Berkshire Packs aim towards helping our specific institutions in the Berkshires, as well. One of my favs is our Inspired By Immigrants Pack, perfect for someone who is looking for something new to appreciate. The pack features a wide variety of items (subject to change) that were selected in tandem with the Berkshire Immigrant Center. And proceeds from your purchase will go towards BIC, as well!

For The Cousin Who’s Always Following A New Trend

We’ve shown you plenty of ideas for our pre-themed packs, but it doesn’t stop there! For those relatives who just can’t quite fit into a mold (and good for them!) we are also able to fully customize a pack for you using items from our other packs, and other items from The Shop! We always say come by and see our selection in person to help make your decision.

And that’s it! Our 2022 holiday gift guide, offering just a taste of some of our favorite things, and a taste of what you can expect when shopping with us this holiday season. Our Black Friday deals are listed here for this year along with some excellent sales, door prizes, and more ways to save and spend locally in the Berkshires. Check it out, and we’d love to see you!

What you need to know about holiday shopping this year

We’re back at it again, dear reader! Coming in faster than Alyssa Edwards is the 2022 holiday shopping season!

Each year we at The Shop look forward to how we can create a shopping experience for you and what unique opportunities our shopping can create for you. But with that comes a need to understand what the holiday shopping season is going to look like.

And within the past few years, that’s more important than ever!

So let’s take a look, shall we? Let’s pull back the economic curtain (so to speak) and take a glance at what holiday shopping with look like for shops, for shoppers, and everyone in between.

2022 Holiday Shopping Statistics

Right on the outset we’re seeing that shopping is going to be less this year. According to a ShipStation study done this year, spending will be decreasing for up to 58% of U.S. consumers. That’s no joke!

That said, a study this year by the National Retail Federation said that 62% of holiday shoppers surveyed felt that despite rising prices will make sure they shop for gifts, and celebrate their loved ones as they do every year.

Consumers are wanting to see the value of their dollar go as far as it can, and that means making sure what they purchase has a stronger value.

Not only that, but we’re seeing a rise in the want for sustainable products and gifts when shopping, especially among Generation Z.

Shop Local = Shop Smart

So what does that mean? What options are available when trying to find gifts that are not only sustainable but also of equal or increasingly higher value? Shopping locally, of course!

Sticking to locally sourced gifts and products means returning money back more directly to your community, and in exchange getting a product that’s hand-crafted or small batch created. This ensures more attention was paid to the creation of the product, and almost always better quality.

Shopping local also can mean your product is going to be more sustainable, created from and/or supplied by a more sustainable source (of course mentioning the tried and true example of a hand-crafted product vs fast fashion).

MONEY & MATRIMONY: How to negotiate with wedding vendors

Welcome back, dear reader, to Money & Matrimony! The monthly series where I look at the intersection of spounces and spending, and try to demystify the financial nuisances of nuptials. Basically help you make budgeting and spending money on your next wedding easier!

We’ve been spending the past few months looking at specific budget items that you might be including (like a certain sensible dress) and some tips that could help you prepare. But let’s take a couple of steps back and look at our wedding budget with a broader lens. Not only that, but let’s talk about some tips that can help you with your budget as a whole, especially as you begin to speak to wedding vendors.

That’s right, we're negotiating

How To Negotiate With Wedding Vendors

Have A Clear Idea Of Your Budget

Based on my previous entries with this series, this one might seem most obvious. I do still believe it’s worth stressing that you really should have a solid idea of how much you’re willing to spend overall, and also for each vendor. This is another instance of “why”.

When you get to the point of negotiating, this gives you a chance to see where you can finagle with your vendors, and which vendors you’re able to move the needle on regarding their prices. This will also help you to…

Pick Your (well researched within your budget) Battles

When deciding on your vendors, it’s always helpful to have a closer look into that vendor's prices, and fees, and any reviews that they might have gotten. This will give you a clear idea of what you’re paying for, and what you’re signing up for relationship-wise (depending on the vendor you could be working with them for an extended time period).

Once you have that, and a well-researched budget, you can have an idea of where you would want to lean more into negotiating prices.

Be Polite

This one might go without saying, but you would be surprised!

We know that the wedding industry is a competitive market, but sometimes couples can underestimate just how competitive it can get to secure the vendors they want during their selected days.

So with that said, be careful when you’re looking to negotiate. If you start haggling and coming off as someone a vendor wouldn’t want to work with, they can easily move on and work with someone else.

Always assume there’s another couple who is looking at the same time you are, because chances are that’s exactly what is happening.

That isn't a reason to panic, though! On the contrary, this can be a chance for you to learn more about why the vendor sets the prices the way they do. Figuring that insight out can help you with other vendors overall, as well, and give you more insight on where to put wiggle room in your budget.

Thanksgiving Around The World

I’ll be honest, dear reader. I’m so fascinated by holidays around the world and their differences.

I’ve talked before about how different holidays in America are celebrated elsewhere around the world. Typically, though, these holidays are all celebrating the same thing but the traditions of how might be a little different.

That changes with Thanksgiving!

As you know, Thanksgiving in America is that time of year right smack dab in the middle of the holiday season (it starts October 1 with Halloween and I won’t apologize for it!). Kind of a pit stop to rest, relax, and feast, as America gears up for the major arcana of the holidays.

But the title of “Thanksgiving” isn’t as definitive as one would think from country to country. Not even as definitive as being synonymous with indigenous culture.

So let’s take a look, shall we?

How Thanksgiving Is Celebrated Around The World

Canada

Let’s start with our neighbors to the North. Despite being celebrated on a Monday instead of a Thursday, Canadian Thanksgiving I would argue is one of the most similar to the American holiday and traditions. A feast to mark the harvest, autumnal vegetables are served (like in America) if not regional dishes, too (like salmon!).

Historically, and also over simplifying, Thanksgiving was celebrated irregularly and on different dates depending where in the country you were. Eventually it was declared a civic holiday in 1872 and a national holiday in 1879.

Japan

Formally titled Labor Thanksgiving Day, Japanese Thanksgiving is celebrated on November 23rd every year (unless the 23rd is a Sunday and then the holiday is observed on the following Monday). The holiday originally celebrates the year’s harvest, the festival then originally called Niiname-sai

But, the holiday we know of today was created after World War II to commemorate the work of those who contribute to public service for the good of the country. Kids will make cards and gifts for police, coast guard, and other public facing service workers.

India

Thanksgiving in India takes on different forms and traditions depending on where you are, though not totally common. One area where it’s celebrated the most is in Goa. Under a different name, Ladin or Ladainha, the holiday is celebrated as a Christian holiday where those celebrating give thanks to God for their well being and they’ve been given.

Wheat, candles, and tinsel paper are some of what is purchased, and altars are built for proper celebrations.

Your Own Backyard

How do you celebrate Thanksgiving? What traditions do you or your family have that you keep year after year? Let us know!

History of Halloween: Superstitions!

So last time we had a chat, dear reader, I wanted to talk to you more about why we have the traditions and customs on Halloween that we do each and every year.

Last time we talked about the costumes specifically, as that is 90% (I mean I would say) of what people think of when they think of Halloween.

But now let’s get a bit broader! Let’s look at superstitions!

Why superstitions in total you might ask? Well, when I sat down to really think about what else from Halloween I wanted to know history-wise, everything I researched led back to some sort of superstition and/or old wives tale.

So with that said, let’s dive right in and take a look!

History of Famous Halloween Superstitions

Black Cats

One of my favorites and the first one I wanted to really research! Why are black cats considered unlucky, or witches’ pets (if not witches themselves in disguise)? Why are black cats associated with Halloween for just about anyone?

So in some ways, the association of black cats and witches is part of a broader history. Witches, as far as back as the 15th century, in western culture would have familiars. A familiar was seen as a creature that a witch had, given to her oftentimes by the devil, as an assistant for her dastardly work.

Outside of that, though, cats have long held reverence in religions and cultures for centuries. Thinking more specifically about the origins of Halloween in Samhain (which we discussed last time!) black cats were associated with the traditions of Celtic pagans, as they are striking nocturnal animals lurking in the shadows.

Since then, black cats have kept a footing in the culture of the gothic, the alternative, and the subversive. In the 19th century in America is when we really started to see black cats in popular culture. To top it all off, Edgar Allen Poe’s, The Black Cat, really cemented the ebony feline in the hearts of those with an affinity for Halloween.

But since we’re (sort of) on the topic of witches, there are other items connected to witches that I was curious to know the origin story of. Something like…

Witches’ Broomsticks

Why do witches ride broomsticks? Why broomsticks in the first place? Let’s talk about it.

So, historically, witches have been depicted riding broomsticks as early as the 1400’s, with the very first depiction we know from 1451 from illustrations for a published poem by a French poet named Martin Le Franc.

But why broomsticks??

Well, the two women in the illustrations, according to this source, are Waldesians. This is a branch of protestant Christianity, reformed faiths that separated from the Catholic Church. Also, brooms are a symbol of feminine domesticity. These illustrations then are implying that these two women are taking the ideas of domesticity and perverting them (having these phallic symbols between their legs so wildly). It certainly makes you wonder how the Catholic church, or at least those that are Catholics, felt about those are took a different religious path.

These ideas of domesticity for the woman in the home, and the broomstick (with sweeping being such a definitive part of “keeping a home”) kept up and continued on throughout the centuries, and thus the connection with witches stuck.

One other more literal example of “flying” on a broomstick, was at this time, hallucinogenic drugs couldn’t be ingested. They had to be applied to mucous membranes…like…well…let’s just say rubbing these on the end of a broomstick and sticking that between your legs really got the job done.

And when you’re tripping on hallucinogens, who’s not to tell you that you’ve taken flight?

Jack O’Lanterns

So this one is, probably, the most straightforward.

The story of the Jack O’Lantern comes from an old Irish tale of a man named “Stingy Jack” who had a drink with the devil at a bar. True to his name, Jack didn’t want to pay for the drinks so he convinced the devil to turn himself into a coin to become the payment.

But instead of paying, Jack took the coin for himself, and kept the devil coin next to a silver cross so the devil couldn’t transform into his proper form.

Once Jack allowed him to do so, he lured the devil into another one of his tricks which led to the devil being stuck in a tree for 10 years.

Once Jack died, God did think Jack was a pure enough soul for heaven. That said, Jack had made another deal with the devil during his lifetime that prevented the devil from taking his soul to hell, as well. So as such, Jack takes his soul and decides to live on in a hollowed out turnip, making a lantern. Each year we make our own “Jack of the lanterns” or “Jack O’Lanterns” in a similar way to what Jack himself did to make a home for his soul after he had passed on.

History of Halloween: The Costumes!

Okay, so this is a fun one. I feel like Halloween is one of those more modern/secular holidays where people all the time will say “oh yeah I know the history of the holiday and where everything stems from” but either not actually knowing, or only having a more vague generic idea.

Not to worry! I have truly wanted to do more of a deep dive on the history of Halloween so without further adieu…the History of Halloween! A mini-series where I explore the history of the holiday from it’s beginnings to where we’re at today!

The History of the Halloween Costume

Okay We Know Samhain But…

Samhain, /ˈsɑːwɪn, ˈsaʊɪn/, the pagan festival to mark the end of harvest season that began in Ireland, is where we typically associate most any origins the many traditions we continue and uplift every Halloween. And…costumes are no different!

This is a point in the year when spirits wander the world freely, and when we as humans offer food to the spirits that wander.

When dressing in costume, at this time you would dress up as various animals, you might be mistaken and considered a wandering spirit yourself, either by those around you or the spirits themselves.

Eventually Chistianity swept up Samhain, and many of its traditions, with other pagan holidays as Christianity spread through Europe, shaping these holidays to fit their own teachings and beliefs.

Costuming then took a different turn as people would then dress up to be like souls of those their passed on relatives, and later as demons and other spirits.

How About In America?

Once there started to be a large wave of Irish immigrants in the 1800’s, Halloween as we know it today began to finally take root in America.

And costumes were one of the biggest reasons that it spread so quickly! Costumes gave a sense of anonymity to the wearer, and with that and the comradery of dressing up in strange outfits, it was a no brainer!

At this point, though, costumes were typically made with whatever was had on hand at home. And in a roundabout way, this is what led to one of the most iconic images of Halloween costumes, the bedsheet ghost.

The idea of the bedsheets most likely stems from the burial shrouds that were placed on bodies centuries before Halloween first appeared in America via Irish immigrants, but it was certainly a costume that had passed down. And with continuing with the idea of using whatever you had to make your costume, a bedsheet gets really as simple as it gets.

Almost always recognizable, the look of the bedsheet ghost was even referenced as early as 1920 on a Saturday Evening Post cover by Norman Rockwell.

Like All Things America…Commercialism!

In the 20’s/30’s, Halloween costumes started to begin being mass produced and companies started to pop up that licensed popular IP to turn into Halloween costumes.

One of the first? Most likely Mickey Mouse

Do I Need To Say The Rest?

I really think that Halloween costumes are a great barometer of popular culture of the year. Why wait for year end listicles online of what the most popular tv show is, when all you need to do is see the most popular costume of that year. In that way, because my favorite thing to do at a party is people watching, costumes are one of my favorite parts of the Halloween season. That and I get to look just absolutely fabulous. ✨
