Your 2022 Holiday Party Checklist

Okay so now that the King and Queen of Christmas have both made their entrances, we are officially in the swing of the 2022 holiday season!

Well for most people (I for one love to give Halloween it’s due as my personal start, even if the holiday has got a bit more cobwebs).

So what does that mean? Why, it means merriment, fun and fancy lights, cozy fireplace evenings around the tree, and above all else, THE PARTIES.

I’m just gonna say it, dear reader, I love a good holiday party. I’m stuffed on charcuterie and chardonnay by 4pm and watching a holiday movie I’ve never seen before (or haven’t for at least 365 days) just to later be filled to the brim with more of the same along with laughs and love from close friends and loved ones.

And, if I’m feeling up to it, I’ve been wanting to dip my toe in the hosting pool. I think it’s finally that time for me (that and my apartment is now big enough to both host people and keep a cozy vibe).

And what about you? Thinking of doing the same? Asking yourself, “how to throw a holiday party?”

Well never fear! This double virgo party planner has done the digging and is ready to impart with you exactly what you need to know for the holiday soiree of your dreams.

Oh and just for the record, this is for an at-home holiday party. I love a company party as much as the next Mad Men fanatic, but I’m sticking with at-home for this round.

Your 2022 Holiday Checklist

Pick Your Date! Set Your Budget!

First and foremost (just like what I say with any wedding) figure out both your date and your budget. Put out feelers if you need to to see what dates work best for people. And don’t stress too much about your budget. In the end, your budget will be fine if you’re able to have clear delineations for food, alcohol, entertainment, favors, wiggle room, etc. Just making sure each aspect has a budget line. This is also where you can send out a save the date to friends, but before that make sure you…

Finalize Your Guest List!

Very important to remember! I’ve always heard the rule of expecting ⅔ the amount of people you invite, but in the end it differs from friend group to friend group (especially if it’s a more intimate affair).

But always plan for more than anticipated, and set your RSVP date at minimum two-three weeks out (you can do sooner, but with so many parties happening this time of year, the earlier the better!

Oh and did I mention set your RSVP Date? I did, and I will again!!!

Establish Holiday Theme and Party Events!

You’ve got the guests and budget down, now let’s get creative!

Create your theme (pretty easy when calling it a holiday party does half the job) and see what events/entertainment you can incorporate into the timeline of the evening.

Going with a classic white elephant party? Putting a twist on the classics instead?

Do you need to think about bringing in any outside help (like a bartender or server or DJ)?

I would say this is the point where you can really finalize any major budget tweaks, especially as you get closer to that RSVP date.

Did I mention adding an RSVP date? I did!!!

Make A Countdown!

Build up the momentum and get your guests excited! Oftentimes in this day and age people will set up a Facebook group where they set up invites. Use this to put in posts for themed cocktails you’re creating, white elephant rules, etc. This is a great time to create a buzz.

It’s also a great time to make a countdown for the day of, and that wonderful RSVP date (I truly can’t stress that enough).

HAVE FUN!

Okay so you’ve made it to the evening! Congrats! Sure you’ll be in hosting mode all evening, but remember that you set this up for yourself, as well. So with that in mind, make sure to stay present and have fun!

Enjoy the ride of the night. Holiday parties and (almost) always once a year so take advantage of the love and merriment while you can.

Save Your Ornaments (& Notes) For Next Year!

You did it! You made the party happen, and you should be proud of your hard work.

Would you consider it again? Anyone who’s planned a party before knows there’s just some things you’ve gotta learn along the way. And if that happens to you, great!

Take those notes to heart when you pack away your decor and say your goodbyes. That can only come in handy for a bigger and better holiday party next year.
